Benefits Granted to Same-Sex Military Couples

In August, the Defense Department announced that they will be providing same-sex spouses of military personnel with benefits (including health coverage, housing allowances, and survivor benefits). This comes after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act earlier in the year. Same-sex couples must have a marriage certificate from one of the 13 states where same-sex marriage is legal. Below are the states where same-sex marriage is currently legal:

Massachusetts

California

Connecticut

Iowa

Vermont

New Hampshire

New York

Washington

Maine

Maryland

Rhode Island

Delaware

Minnesota

For those service men and women who are not yet married, they must travel to one of these states to obtain a marriage certificate. The Pentagon has granted these service personnel a 7-day leave, which is why so many same-sex military couples traveled during the month of September to get legally married. Some are not in a rush, but many want to reap the benefits that are now being granted to military personnel and their domestic partners. Most of these couples will travel to obtain a marriage license, then have a ceremony with their families at a later date.

This is a major sign of changing times. There was a time when it was unheard of to even admit that you were a homosexual serving in the military. Now, it is not only accepted, but the government is allowing same-sex couples to take a leave from their duties to obtain a marriage license. What do you think about the Pentagon granting same-sex military couples a 7 day leave in order to get married?

Halle Berry & Oliver Martinez Tie the Knot in France

This past weekend, Halle Berry and Oliver Martinez exchanged vows in a private ceremony in France. On Saturday July 13th, the love birds were first wed at a courthouse as part of a civil ceremony. They then had a very private religious ceremony at Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France. About 60 guests attended, while white marquees were used to keep the event hidden. Very few pictures have been leaked, but below you can see Halle arriving to the church in a car.

The reception included dinner, dancing, a fireworks display, and it is rumored that the party went well into the night.

But this isn’t the first go-around for Ms. Berry. Halle’s first marriage was to former Atlanta Braves outfielder David Justice and lasted from 1993-1997.

Her second marriage was to R&B singer and composer Eric Benet. They spent four years married (2001-2005), and after a messy divorce Halle swore that she would never EVER marry again.

Well, here we are in 2013, and hopefully third time’s the charm! She seems to be very happy with Oliver, and we wish her and Oliver all the best as they start their new life together!
